Working from the first round I posted earlier this week, let’s move on to round two. Round three will likely be up tomorrow.
33. Jacksonville Jaguars – Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
The Jags lost Terrance Knighton and C.J. Mosley this offseason, and I like the Roy Miller signing, but they could use someone who can provide pass rush up the middle, too, and Short could eventually be a better all-around player than either Miller or Tyson Alualu.
34. San Francisco 49ers – Matt Elam, S, Florida
They need someone to replace Dashon Goldson. Elam could start from day one.
35. Philadelphia Eagles – Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas Pine-Bluff
They’re going to need offensive line help: Even if Jason Peters is healthy, he’s older, and the rest of the line is a mess. Armstead could start on the right side and take over at left tackle when Peters is gone.
36. Detroit Lions – Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
Both their starting ends from last season are gone, and even though Moore’s stock has fallen with a series of poor workouts, he could represent good value here.
37. Cincinnati Bengals – Kevin Minter, LB, LSU
With an extra pick this round, the Bengals can take a talented player to strengthen up a defensive unit of questionable depth.
38. Arizona Cardinals – Larry Warford, G, Kentucky.
They still need to strengthen up their o-line, and he’s the best player available. The guard position in Arizona continues to be a rotating collection of castoffs and failures.
39. New York Jets – E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida St.
If the rumors that the Jets are trying to get the Buccaneers to take Mark Sanchez’s contract as part of the Darrelle Revis deal are true, they’re clearly going to add a young QB. Manuel is, I think, the best available; a team might even trade up into the first round for him.
40. Tennessee Titans – Justin Pugh, G/T, Syracuse
Andy Levitre will step in and fill one guard spot right away, but the other is still a question, and long-term, Michael Roos and David Stewart aren’t getting any younger.
41. Buffalo Bills – Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
Some team is going to be high on him and take him early. I don’t know if the Bills are that team, but adding a young QB who can potentially be a long-term starter is a pretty clear necessity for them.
42. Miami Dolphins – Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
Hunter represents decent value at this point, and the Dolphins should be looking to add another potential playmaker there. The Mike Wallace signing makes their WR unit acceptable, but it still isn’t powerful.
43. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
It’s not very realistic that Eifert falls this far. I couldn’t find a better place to slot him, though. Tampa Bay certainly needs an upgrade at this position.
44. Carolina Panthers – Jonathan Hankins, DT, Ohio St.
They definitely need an upgrade here, and Hankins is very good value at this point.
45. San Diego Chargers – Robert Woods, WR, USC
Chargers fans should be pretty upset that the Spanos family took so long to fire A.J. Smith. It was clear the talent level on the team was trending in the wrong direction several years ago. Now they’ve bottomed out and need upgrades everywhere. Woods is a good start to a unit that was left in tatters by the departure of Vincent Jackson.
46. St. Louis Rams – Eric Reid, S, LSU
The Rams have lost their starting safeties and currently have nothing but undrafted free agents at the position. Reid would fill one of those slots.
47. Dallas Cowboys – Giovanni Bernard, RB, North Carolina
I think the Cowboys will want to add another running back in the draft. I don’t know if this is too early, but Bernard is a complete running back and could team well with DeMarco Murray (and replace him if he can’t stay healthy).
48. Pittsburgh Steelers – Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
The team let Rashard Mendenhall walk in free agency and they haven’t added anyone. Lacy would give the running game a strong power dimension.
49. New York Giants – Jonathan Banks, CB, Mississippi St.
The Giants tend to take the best player available regardless, and Banks gives them some good secondary depth.
50. Chicago Bears – Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
They signed Martellus Bennett, but adding a second tight end would give them more offensive weapons and flexibility.
51. Washington Redskins – Kyle Long, G/T, Oregon
Trent Williams is good, and Will Montgomery had a good year, but the rest of the line could use help.
52. Minnesota VIkings – D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston
They lost Antoine Winfield from a unit that wasn’t very talented or deep to begin with.
53. Cincinnati Bengals – Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
Mohamed Sanu looks legit; this pick gives the team a potentially potent three-pronged wide receiver attack.
54. Miami Dolphins – Alex Okafor, DE, Texas
They still don’t have much pass rush outside of Cameron Wake, although Olivier Vernon showed some promise as a rookie.
55. Green Bay Packers – John Jenkins, DT, Georgia
B.J. Raji has been something of a mixed bag, and the team might be able to move him to 3-4 end if they take the massive Jenkins to play the nose tackle.
56. Seattle Seahawks – Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
Conveniently, one of the best players available can play 4-3 OLB, one of the Seahawks’ biggest roster holes.
57. Houston Texans – Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
The Texans certainly need WR help and I expect them to target the position early in the draft.
58. Denver Broncos – Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana
The team needs some long-term depth here, as Champ Bailey is nearing the end of the road.
59. New England Patriots – Shamarko Thomas, SS, Syracuse
Sort of an off-the-wall pick. No one really knows what the Patriots will do, but Thomas is rising and could be a significant contributor to a secondary the team has had trouble getting right.
60. Atlanta Falcons – Margus Hunt, DE, SMU
He really projects as more of a 3-4 DE, but if he can rush the passer, the Falcons will find a way to play him. His age (26) is not a problem for the league’s oldest team.
61. San Francisco 49ers – Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi St.
The team needs more depth at CB, as well as a potential future starter.
62. Baltimore Ravens – Travis Frederick, C/G, Wisconsin
Stands a fine chance of stepping right in for the recently retired Matt Birk.
