DUELING MOCKS, Round 1: Five rounds, February 11-12, 2017

vixticator and I occasionally like to do a “dueling mock” draft where we alternate picks. We think it gives us a more accurate picture of how we actually value players, since its’ easy to have some psychological bias to “let” players try to fall to a particular position or team when doing a mock by yourself. With someone else also picking, you can’t do that, so the goal has to be closer to getting the best player possible. Thus, we discover where we actually value players, as opposed to where we think we value them.

I won’t be doing writeups for these picks, since half of them aren’t mine and also this is a five round mock. We alternated back and forth; vix won the coin toss, so he gets odds and I get evens.

ROUND 1

  1. Cleveland Browns – Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
  2. San Francisco 49ers – Myles Garrett, EDGE, Texas A&M
  3. Chicago Bears – Malik McDowell, DL/ED, Michigan State
  4. Jacksonville Jaguars – Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
  5. Tennessee Titans (from LA Rams) – O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
  6. New York Jets – Patrick Mahomes II, QB, Texas Tech
  7. Los Angeles Chargers – Solomon Thomas, DL/ED, Stanford
  8. Carolina Panthers – Jamal Adams, S, LSU
  9. Cincinnati Bengals – Zach Cunningham, LB, Vanderbilt
  10. Buffalo Bills – Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
  11. New Orleans Saints – Tim Williams, EDGE, Alabama
  12. Cleveland Browns (from Philadelphia) – Jonathan Allen, DL/ED, Alabama
  13. Arizona Cardinals – Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
  14. Philadelphia Eagles (from Minnesota) – Teez Tabor, CB, Florida
  15. Indianapolis Colts – Roderick Johnson, OT, Florida State
  16. Baltimore Ravens – DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame
  17. Washington Potatoes – Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
  18. Tennessee Titans – Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State
  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Derek Barnett, EDGE, Tennessee
  20. Denver Broncos – Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
  21. Detroit Lions – Forrest Lamp, OL, Western Kentucky
  22. Miami Dolphins – Takkarist McKinley, EDGE, UCLA
  23. New York Giants – Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
  24. Oakland Raiders – Carl Lawson, EDGE, Auburn
  25. Houston Texans – Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
  26. Seattle Seahawks – Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama
  27. Kansas City Chiefs – Sidney Jones, CB, Washington
  28. Dallas Cowboys – Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan
  29. Green Bay Packers – Jabrill Peppers, LB/S, Michigan
  30. Pittsburgh Steelers – John Ross, WR, Washington
  31. Atlanta Falcons – Montravius Adams, DL, Auburn
  32. New England Patriots – Charles Harris, EDGE, Missouri

The most interesting thing for me here is the slide of Leonard Fournette. I think Fournette is a tremendous talent, one of the most talented players in the entire draft, but finding a proper fit for him might be difficult. I considered him with Carolina at 8– and if I had picked for Cincinnati at 9, I think I would have taken Fournette there– but he really needs a team that wants him to be the centerpiece of a power running game, and many of the teams in between there and where he finally went, to Washington at 17, have bigger needs or have invested significantly at the running back position recently.

  30. PIT – Dawuane Smoot, EDGE, Illinois
  31. ATL – Josh Reynolds, WR, Texas A&M
  32. NE – Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State

vix thinks it’s time for the Jaguars to move on from Blake Bortles. He’s probably right, but I’m mostly annoyed because I was planning to have the Bears take Brad Kaaya next.

I really like the Wayne Gallman fit for Carolina, as his time at Clemson showed he could function well in an offense with read-option elements. Plus, he’s just a good player.

Notes:

  • Indianapolis and Minnesota have the same strength of schedule, so a coin flip will be used at the combine to determine who drafts first. Our mock assumes Philadelphia won the coin flip.
  • Round 4: The Giants’ pick is moved to the end of the round as a penalty, and the Patriots’ pick is forefeited.
  • Round 5: Seattle’s pick is forfeited.
